Streetside charging put to the test
Did you know most of our NXTGENbps batteries are chargeable via an EV type 2 charger?
In the UK, Type 2 electric vehicle (EV) charging points are the standard public charging connectors found on many streets, in car parks, and at workplaces. The Type 2 connector, sometimes called the Mennekes plug, is the official charging standard for most modern EVs sold in the UK and Europe. Street-side Type 2 chargers are typically AC (alternating current) chargers, commonly providing between 4 – 7 kW of power, making them suitable for charging cars while parked for several hours.
Our local council has installed on-street charging points in lampposts in the residential areas near to NXTGENbps HQ, so we thought we’d pop along to try them out.
We took a Swift 3.6kW and a Goat 4.8kW battery along…

The lamppost chargers are accessed through contactless payment, using mobile apps. Our area of Greater London has lamp columns with the operator’s logo and QR code. The ones we used were on the char.gy app. They are a certified B Corp company and their energy is 100% from renewables. It was simple to set up an account and the app gave some good live charging data and even a CO2 saving number.
The pay-as-you-go price at the charge points we used has a night rate of 39p per kWh (midnight–7am) and a day rate of 59p per kWh (7am–midnight). We were charging during the day, so paid the higher rate.
So if you’re out on location and need a quick charge of a NXTGENbps battery – check out the local street charge network here: https://www.zapmap.com/live. Find a charging point and charge away with the knowledge that if you choose your charging-network operator wisely, you will be charging from a renewable power source too!
